The “Star Wars” trilogy is the third film in the franchise, after “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”
That trilogy has become an icon of the Star Wars universe, with “Return” being a cult classic, while “The Force Awakens” and its sequel are still being shown on a daily basis.
However, the “Star War” trilogy itself, which was first published in the late 1940s, has never been adapted into a movie, despite being the only Star Wars film to be adapted into an animated feature.
Here’s how we’ll find out.
First, a little history.
The original “Star Trek” television series, “Starring Kirk” and the original “Journey to Babel” film series, both set in the same fictional universe, began airing on CBS in 1963.
After the series ended in 1964, CBS began producing animated films based on the “Trek” television shows, including “The Motion Picture” and a spinoff, “Spaceballs.”
As part of that agreement, CBS agreed to use “Star Fleet” as the title of all subsequent animated films, including the new “Star wars” films.
A few of those films had already been released as animated shorts before, including those of “Trekkies” and of “K-3SO.”
As such, the terms of the deal were quite simple: the shows would be called “Treks” and be produced under a license from CBS, but the films would be titled “Starwars.”
In exchange, the rights to “StarWars” were transferred to CBS, and the “Jurassic Park” and The Simpsons movies would be produced and directed by Disney.
The first “Starwar” films, like “Starfleet Academy” and those of the “Kwah” and Starwars “Starbases” series, were released by Disney in 1967.
The “Trekties” films were released in 1968, and later released by CBS.
After that, the franchise began to slowly fade out, though it never really went away completely.
It eventually became extinct after the “Return Of The Jedi” films in 1977, with Lucasfilm releasing the “The Phantom Menace” and their “Return to Tatooine” films several years later.
The series ended after “Star” the next year, and its “Return To The Phantom Menacem” movie series ended with the original 1977 film.
The last “StarWar” film was released in 2019, and was produced by Disney, Paramount, and MGM.
The latest “Starweird” film, “Zootopia,” is being released on July 6, 2018.
The newest “StarTrek: The Next Generation” film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 14, 2019.
It stars William Shatner, Zoe Saldana, and Dominic West.
The most recent “Starlight” film has not yet been announced.
But if you’ve never seen a “Starz” animated feature, it’s worth checking out “Star-Crossed,” a series of short films set in a galaxy far, far away that aired from 1996 to 2000.
The film is still available on Netflix.
The next “Star of Tomorrow” film will be released on April 18, 2021.
That’s about a year and a half from now.
“Starfury” and other “Starworld” movies are scheduled for release in 2021.
And then there’s “The Last Jedi.”
This film, which is set around the time of the original trilogy, is a direct continuation of the series.
It is scheduled for an April 2019 release.
In the meantime, the next “Battlestar Galactica” movie, due out in 2019 is expected to be a “Discovery” movie.
Finally, there’s the next film in “Borgen” series “The Dark Age of the Imperium” which was released on May 13, 2019, which features a very different story than the “Talladega Nights” and later “The Hunger Games” series.
